Read More Now About an Upcoming Awesome Event

Home of the

The Festival will Introduce, Inspire and Celebrate sport and be home to the happiest event on earth; the RootSport 15 Happyathon and the Kiddo Ditto (same… just little kiddo size).

There are Marathons, Biathlons, Triathlons, even Heptathlon, and Decathlons, but has there ever been a Happyathon? We had to look that one up too and there hasn’t been, but now there is, and you are invited to be a part of all the festivities.

This little competition consists of 15 events across 15 sports and 15 times the fun. Sounds super hard, but take heart, this comp. is all about the fun. From Tomato Baseball to Paint Ball Tennis to Chocolate Covered Volleyball with many many more along the way (12 more if we did the ‘rithmetic correctly).

Sports have such a power to influence for the good; they are golden for mind, body, soul and spirit. To many the fondest memories are playing with family and friends. From tossing and kicking the ball around in the fresh mowed grass, to riding bikes (sometimes with baseball cards in the wheels), to hiking through the hills, meadows and mountains. The air was pure and the laughs were aplenty. That seems like a long time ago, the Festival and RootSport 15 Happyathon brings that all back.

Along with good grub and terrific tunes it will be a day not to be forgotten. These are the good ‘ole days we will be talking about on our rockers years from now. Memories will certainly be made as many come vie for the solo prize of king or queen of the festival (and yes there will be actual crowns, (we’ll keep the medals for those other “athons”)). Teams will also compete to be named Champions of the Festival (including Championship rings or belts, (we’re still deciding which would be awesomer). Whether 5 or 105 or anywhere in-between join us for a day full of fun, family, friends and sport.

Just Yabba Dabba Do It

A few days back was the 50th anniversary of “The Flintstones,” few have had quite the longevity or engrained in the culture in quite the same way. With that anniversary I wanted to search out what the Flintstones showed us regarding sports. There are loads of lessons to be gained from Bedrock (e.g. make vitamins taste good …lesson for you energy bar peeps). There was one episode, before the jump the shark moment of the introduction of the Great Gazoo (who is more annoying the Great Gazoo or Scrappy Doo?), that had a good lesson for me. Fred is in a slump with his bowling and sees a commercial on T.V. (no the lesson is not the power of good suggestive marketing). The commercial is for a Ballet studio and mentions that rhythm is "the secret of success in many activities, including bowling," Before Hershel Walker Balanced Bulk With Ballet or Emmitt Smith won “Dancing with the Stars”, Fred realized doing something outside the box to improve himself is more than worthwhile. I don’t recall if the Water Buffalos beat the Rockland Rockets to win the tournament or if Fred ever retuned to the ballet studio, it doesn’t really matter (for one: it’s a cartoon!!) what does matter though is that we look to improve ourselves and in turn so the world is around us.

“Sometimes you have to take a leap and build your wings on the way down” ~ Kobi Yamada

When you’re a kid in school and the flyer is put out that advises that sign ups for an upcoming sport season has arrived, loads of us as kids jumped at that opportunity.

Currently I find myself not so ready to take that leap. As a kid my folks never saw the need to throw me into swimming lessons. I could fend for myself well enough and seemed capable to maneuver away from older siblings during dunking fights. Now I find myself with the jonesing to do a triathlon. My major hesitation is the swimming part (maybe a duathlon may suit me better). My first attempt at swimming laps at the local pool, left me not wanting to keep up with the joneses whatsoever. When I first walked in one could see several Olympic level swimmers (so they looked to me, probably just a bunch of pimply faced kiddos) swimming laps. The water of the pool seemed to be glass smooth as they cut through it lap after lap. After watching these professional athletes in the water I finally decided to join in. I had run a few marathons, was not in terrible shape, so I attempted to start swimming laps with every effort to copy their technique. After swimming a few miles (in other words just one length of the pool) I turned to see that I had caused massive waves across the entire pool, and I was exhausted, it was really hard, gosh darn it! I struggled over a few more lengths of the pool, but not wanting to have the coast guard called in to investigate the cause of such enormous swells or have a tropical storm named after me, I called it a day. I returned a few times and it seemed to only get worse. I admit I shelved the idea and focused on running and other workouts. Now the itch is back to do a Tri. I suppose I at least have to give it another go and build those wings on my way down to the bottom of the pool.

I’m not a kid anymore but sometimes I sit and wish I was a kid again…

There was song, some time ago, that talked about sometimes wishing one was a kid again… on Saturday I got to be a kid again. The event was called “The Dirty Dash”

From the events website:
"Have you ever said to yourself, “Marathons are too easy, and Triathlons are for sissies?”

We haven’t either… those races are really hard. Think about it… the first person to run a marathon actually died. HE DIED!... and he probably didn’t even have fun along the way!

Well, let us introduce you to the new race in town… THE DIRTY DASH. This race puts all other races to shame. The Dirty Dash is where a military boot camp meets your inner five-year-old’s fantasy and subsequently converts boy to man and then… man to swine.

You’ll need endurance to trudge up mountains of sludge, courage to overcome uncompromising obstacles, a complete lack of shame to wallow in pits of mud and a smile to show through at the end!

So let this 10K obstacle course become your new guilty pleasure. Go solo or with 4 of your dirtiest, filthiest, & uncouth friends. On either accord… you will be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say “I am a Dirty Dasher!”… and then proceed to clean yourself off.”

I am still working on the cleaning myself off…
Being a kid, with my kids and all the people that were there, was a complete blast!
